(For those of you that asked for this to be reblog-able)

The Cooper Union is was one of the last remaining tuition free schools in the county. When it was founded in 1859 by Peter Cooper he believe that education should be “as free as air and water.”

Today the “Board of Trustees” announced their decision to start charging undergrad tuition.

It is no secret that the institution has been having financial problems. But the Board refuses to take responsibility for the poor decisions they have made. They are the reason the institution is in debt.

The school had put together a task force of alumni, faculty, and students to try and figure out ways to get out of debt without charging tuition but the board refused to listen. They chose the easiest way out for THEM.

Astronaut Hall of Fame welcomes 1st female shuttle commander, 2 others
Since inductees provide materials for exhibits, the Astronaut Hall of Fame has the world’s largest collection of astronaut memorabilia.

“Eileen Collins, the first woman to pilot and command the space shuttle, entered the ranks of the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame wearing the same two-piece blue suit she wore to her astronaut selection interview nearly 25 years ago.”

    Personal Statement.

I am completely left empty by the decision of the so called Board of Trustees. To have the audacity to go against the very basic values of the institution that you are suppose to protect is mind boggling. This should not have even been an option.

These “Trustees” have destroyed a historical institution. Personally, I feel these “Trustees” should be tarred and feathered in Cooper Square by The Cooper Community.

The Cooper Union community needs to fight back. The “Trustees” obviously do not have The Cooper Union’s best interests in mind when making decisions.

I’d like to extend my full congratulations to the Board of Trustees. You’ve single handedly destroyed the The Cooper Union.

The Family Portrait, or sometimes Portrait of the Planets, is an image of the Solar System acquired by Voyager 1 on February 14, 1990 from a distance of approximately 6 billion kilometers from earth. It features individual frames of six planets and a partial background indicating their relative positions. The picture is a mosaic of 60 individual frames.

The frames used to compose the image were the last photographs taken by either Voyager spacecraft (which continued to relay other telemetry afterward). These frames were also the source of the famous “Pale Blue Dot” image of the Earth. Astronomer Carl Sagan, who was part of the Voyager imaging team, campaigned for many years to have the pictures taken.

Happy Earth Day: Earthrise

One of the most famous aspects of the Apollo 8 flight was the Earthrise picture that was taken as they came around for their fourth orbit of the Moon. This was the first time that humans had taken such a picture whilst actually behind the camera, and it has been credited with a role in inspiring the first Earth Day in 1970. It was selected as the first of Life magazine’s ‘hundred photos that changed the world’.
Taken by Apollo 8 crewmember Bill Anders on December 24, 1968, showing the Earth seemingly rising above the lunar surface. Note that this phenomenon is only visible from someone in orbit around the Moon. Because of the Moon’s synchronous rotation about the Earth (i.e., the same side of the Moon is always facing the Earth), no Earthrise can be observed by a stationary observer on the surface of the Moon.
